Just when we thought that America has advanced to the point of getting past hate, race, and classism that forced a movement for the ages in the 1960's that created voting rights, civil rights, and equal protection under the law, here comes the New Republican Party and the resurrection of Bull Connor!!!For those of you who are not familiar with ole Bull, let me enlighten you.
Theophilus Eugene "Bull" Connor (July 11, 1897 – March 10, 1973) was the Commissioner of Public Safety for the city of Birmingham, Alabama, during the American Civil Rights Movement. His office gave him responsibility for administrative oversight of the Birmingham Fire Department and the Birmingham Police Department, which had their own chiefs.
Through his covert actions to enforce racial segregation and deny civil rights to African American citizens, especially during the Southern Christian Leadership Conference's Birmingham Campaign of 1963, Connor became an international symbol of bigotry. Connor infamously directed the use of fire hoses, and police attack dogs against peaceful demonstrators, including children.[1][2] His aggressive tactics backfired when the spectacle of the brutality being broadcast on national television served as one of the catalysts for major social and legal change in the southern United States and helped in large measure to assure the passage by the United States Congress of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Eugene Connor was member of the Alabama Ku Klux Klan in the 1920s. Connor entered politics as a Democrat in 1934, winning a seat in the Alabama Legislature. As a legislator he supported populist measures and pro-union issues. He voted for extending the poll tax and against an anti-sedition bill meant to stifle union activity. He did not stand for a second term in 1936, instead running for Commissioner of Public Safety for the City of Birmingham.. In 1936, Connor was elected to the office of Commissioner of Public Safety, beginning the first of two stretches that spanned a total of 26 years. Connor's first term ended in 1952, but he resumed the post four years later.
In 1948, Connor's officers arrested U.S. Senator from Idaho, Glen H. Taylor, the running mate of Progressive presidential candidate (and former Democratic Vice President) Henry Wallace. Taylor, who had attempted to speak to the Southern Negro Youth Congress, was arrested for violating Birmingham's segregation laws.
Connor's concerted effort to enforce the law was sparked by the group's reported communist philosophy, with Connor noting at the time, "There's not enough room in town for Bull and the Commies." During the 1948 Democratic National Convention, Connor led the Alabama delegation in a walkout when the national party included a civil rights plank in its platform.[3] The offshoot States' Rights Democratic Party (Dixiecrats) nominated Strom Thurmond for president at its convention in Birmingham's Municipal Auditorium.
Endorsed by the Governor of Alabama, Connor attempted to run for mayor, but lost on April 2, 1963. Bull and his fellow commissioners then filed suit to block the change in power, but on May 23, the Alabama Supreme Court ruled against Connor's position, ending his 23-year tenure in the post. Birmingham had voted to change from a commission form of government to a mayor-council form of government. Connor, citing a general law, contended that the change could not take effect until the October 1 following the date of the election, but the Supreme Court of Alabama held that the general law was preempted by a special law applicable only to the City of Birmingham.
The day after the April election, civil rights leaders, led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., began "Project 'C'" (for "confrontation") in Birmingham against the police tactics used by Connor and his subordinates (and, by extension, other Southern police officials). King's arrest during this period would provide him the opportunity to write his famous Letter from Birmingham Jail. The goal of this movement was to cause mass arrests and subsequent inability of the judicial and penal systems to deal with this volume of activity. One key strategy was the use of children to further the cause, a tactic that was criticized on both sides of the issue. The short-term effect only increased the level of violence used by Connor's officers, but in the long term the project proved largely successful.
Fast forward to 1/2/12 at the Iowa caucuses and the current Republican candidates' comments and it would make Bull proud.
Rick Santorum: "President Obama's plan is to make more people dependent upon the government. He wants to make sure that we have more food stamps, more ssi, more medicare, 4 in 10 children are on medicaid(government provided healthcare) )But its not like the government healthcare that the senators and the house receives.) He just keeps expanding the government, he wants to push these programs so that you can depend on him and he can then get your vote. So the bottom line is I don't want to give black people somebody else's money to make their lives better."!!!!!!!!Are blacks the only people who receive welfare benefits? No Rick! Actually statistically, white non-hispanics receive 34%, blacks non-hispanic receive 22%, and hispanics receive 17% of welfare benefits. So why single one race out Rick??? Blowing the dog whistle again?
Ron Paul does his best Bull Connor impression by stating that "It was the government that caused the racial tensions during the civil rights era by ending slavery, ending Jim Crow laws, and putting a stop to unequal rights for minorities." He went on to state that he would not have voted for the civil rights act of 1964 that outlawed segregation, and discrimination against women and blacks. He said that it did not help fight racism, but rather it destroyed the principles of private property and private choices.
Newton Leroy Gingrich: "Poor children in poor areas have no examples of any people who work around them because no one around them works, therefore they have no work habits. They have no habit of showing up on Monday, no habit of working all day. There is no idea of i do this for you and you give me cash unless its illegal because their only role models are pimps, prostitutes, and drug dealers.
But many people "of color" continue to attack President Obama for attempting to help these very same genre of people. Oh well, I guess you could vote for Bull Connor's predecessors. After all, I let them speak for themselves...

In fact, the only place where one can rationally equate the release of vicious dogs on children with what amounts to mere bigoted words from fifth-rate politicians is the "parellel universe" where you apparently reside.
Surely you must know that -- in your attempts to divert attention away from the cruel political and economic pain that African Americans presently suffer due to the uncaring Republican-lite / right-wing policies of the current administration -- you are dishonoring the Movement heroes and heroines with your antics.
You should be ashamed of yourself!
What I find particularly troublesome, is how you continue to play these silly distraction games with schizoid-like emotional detachment from the "real" plight of American Americans. You obviously don't care.
While informed and responsible others are discussing the economic plight of our people; the loss of $200 billion in home foreclosures in the last 3 years, the 1930s Depression era level of unemployment over the past 3 years, the willful revoking of civil liberties, and the willful destruction of the public school system (transferring it to Wall Street), wealth transfers that have devastated many of our communities--ruining families, etc., you have the gall to bother folk with your child-like ramblings which seek to facilitate African Americans' foolishly forgetting about all the afore and focus on what some bigot has said because to do so would be more materially significant to their group interest than focuising on the real world that too many "feel" and suffer everyday.
Give it a rest, man.
Moreover, isn't this the same "Newt" who regularly visits the White House and who was/is best buddy with your administration co-worker Al Sharpton over the past 3 years or so? Didn't they tour the country together, promoting privatization of the public schools in Black communities (giving them to Wall Street) under the guise of "improving education"?
All I'm saying is your "bogeyman" strategy is pathetic. What you are trying to do is arouse "emotionalism" in African Americans at the very time in our experience when it is most important that we think. Think critically.
You should give it a rest. Especially, since you have regressed from assigning value to trivia-- calling the trivia acts "accomplishments," when the only tangible one of them was the executive order which revoked a long standing "affirmative action" law that provided Defense Department contracts to small African American businesses-- to disrespecting those whose shoulders upon which we stand.
If you could cite real accomplishments, and if the people could "feel" such, then you wouldn't have to paly games, as you are obviously attempting tod, in order to motivate people to turn out. That's your real mission.
Here are a few "accomplihments" that would certainly do the job if they were real:
1. Lower Black unemployment from 11% to 5%, by using executive power to have have each department spend 5% of its budget in all areas of all races that had been economically depressed for 20 years. This was also achieved by supporting numerous jobs bills passed by the house between 2009 and December, 2010.
2. Issued a moratorium on home foreclosures (which saved $200 billion in intergenerational Black wealth) by directing the treasury department to use its power to ensure that the $75 billion given to banks were used for that purpose.
3.Improved the quality of public education by revoking the unscientific Bush era "no child left behind" (until all the jails are filled) policy with one that resourced all schools equally rather than rely on meaningless tests that are pushed only because they are a multi-billion business.
4. Protected the environment by upholding strong regulations at EPA.
5. Implemented policies that resulted in lowering the mass incarceration rate of African Americans.
6. Protected civil liberties by vetoing all attempts to breach such fundamental rights.
In the absence of such "accomplishments," you and your ilk are reduced to peddling "bogeyman" nonsensical distractions to African Americans. Given this, it is no surprise that you would return even more shamelessly than before, equating the foul mouthed words of a handful of wannabe (Wall Street worshiping) politicians (whom few, if any, Blacks will vote for anyway) with the lynching, beating, raping, and political-economic exploitation of our elders and ancestors of the Civil Rights Movement and era.
Have you no shame?
Besides, it was "Rand" the son, not "Ron" Paul who said those things you alluded to.
Finally, your opening sentence is proof that you are out of touch with the real world; a statement that contributes richly to an understanding of your salient propensity and / or vunerability to personality cultism and zealotry. These traits are evident in your illogical postulates.
You wrote:"Just when we thought that America has advanced to the point of getting past hate, race, and classism" [resistant against which led to the Civil Rights Movement], etc., etc. But you see, "we" didn't think that. "We" have always known better and never believed the "post-racial" 2008 presidential campaign propaganda.
Only the credulous like you ever believed such nonsense. And now you want to come bothering us with your crushed fantasies and cognitive dissonance.
My advice to you:"stop whining. Stop complaining. Take off your bed room slippers. We've got work to do."

"We are constantly told that it is evil to be afraid of black men, it is hardly irrational."
"After the Los Angeles riots, one article in a newsletter claimed, "Order was only restored in L.A. when it came time for the blacks to pick up their welfare checks."

Permalink Reply by Bennetta on January 13, 2012 at 11:34pm Now tell me again exactly how President Obama is attempting to help "people of color"....? Perhaps its by signing to extend the Patriot Act that illegally reinstated Cointelpro OR perhaps its by his recent signing of the NDAA dismantling the Constitution OR perhaps its by ignoring these "people of color" Constituents during the past three years OR perhaps its by all the wonderful Democratic policies he's created to assist the ever-growing millions of Americans now living in POVERTY OR perhaps its the policies that support all the struggling Middle/Working/Poor classes whom all voted DEMOCRATIC but got REPUBLICAN/CENTRIST presidential treatment during the past 3 years. BUT NOW YOU SUGGEST WE "PEOPLE OF COLOR" CONSTITUENTS FORGIVE HIM FOR FORGETTING ABOUT US FOR A FULL 3-YEAR PERIOD? Well on behalf of the "people of color" you think appropriate to refer to us as, "NO THANKS....WE'RE NOT BUYING."
Forgetting about you as a people? Really now? Tell me, why is it that the Congressional Black Caucus, who makes the laws have been getting reelected for over two decades? I mean since the argument is what has been done to address the issues in black america. What do you say about them and YOUR VOTING RECORD TOWARDS THEM, WHO MAKE THE LAWS? Or is it that our President should carry the burden for unenlightened people like you who clearly do not have a command over the issues of our time. Hint: Make note to self to do extensive reading of 1) the history of our country 2) the issues of our community 3) the politicians who have the power to pass legislation to help BLACK AMERICA BUT HAS NOT. Good luck and if you don't like America's choice of a President then live abroad for four more years because he will be relected and with people like you gone, we can heal as a nation and move our country forward.
Permalink Reply by Bennetta on January 14, 2012 at 2:50pm First, Congressional Black Caucus DOES NOT in themselves make ANY laws and we Democratic "people of color" NEVER VOTED FOR THE CBC to be our DEMOCRATIC CHOICE as Commander in Chief, therefore, that unsubstantiated excuse will not suffice nor do/should we hold CBC personally accountable for any of YOUR REPUBLICAN/CENTRIST president's REPUBLICAN policies which he's repeatedly indoctrinated, enforced and even extended from His REPUBLICAN mentoring predecessor. With that said, take your fake-ass back to Obama 2012 Campaign and tell them, "THE 'PEOPLE OF COLOR' ARE STILL NOT BUYING THAT 'REPUBLICAN IN COGNITO' BS!"

You could not possibly be that stupid! But then again yes nyou could because again you don't read!! If you know how to read. The Congressional Black Caucus consists of UNITED STATES CONGRESSMEN! MEMBERS OF THE US HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES WHO MAKE THE LAWS. AGAIN PRESIDENT OBAMA SIGNS BILLS INTO LAWS STUPID!!! SORRY!! I WILL NEVER BE A GREEDY SELF-SERVING REPUBLICAN LIKE YOURSELF!!! Permalink Reply by Bennetta on January 14, 2012 at 9:19pm Hey fake-ass professor Congress is made up of two chambers (House and Senate). House consists of 435 members and Senate 100 members. CBC is merely a fractional segment of Congress (43 members aka the 12.5% of Congress equivalent to the 12.5% Black U.S. population!!!). Hence, CBC IN ITSELF (AND BY ITSELF) DOES NOT MAKE OUR LAWS. You fake-ass GED wannabe professor there happens to be a whole bunch of other Congressional members that has ‘say’ along with these 43 CBC members! A Bill is NOT necessarily raised by House but c/b raised by Senate or both chambers simultaneously. SO AGAIN THE CBC IN ITSELF (AND EXCLUSIVELY BY ITSELF) DOES NOT MAKE THE LAWS! They are merely a representative of the MINORITY/BLACK population in hopes of ensuring a level of “consciousness” to our legislative body and voice to the often voiceless Constituency of the Black population and also to ensure such REPUBLICAN OR REPUBLICAN/CENTRIST administrations such as the current one does not get too ridiculous with their right-wing REPUBLICAN policies and initiatives. AND AGAIN WE NEVER VOTED FOR THE CBC AS OUR PRESIDENT ANYWAY SO THAT FAKE-ASS UNSUBSTANTIATED EXCUSE WILL NOT WORK!
SO ONCE AGAIN....take your fake-ass back to Obama 2012 Campaign and tell them, "THE 'PEOPLE OF COLOR' ARE STILL NOT BUYING THAT 'REPUBLICAN IN COGNITO' BS!"

Barack Obama’s minority support strong in swing states

African-American and Hispanic voters in swing states still back President Barack Obama by overwhelming margins and are motivated to go to the polls — but Latino support rates are lagging behind 2008 levels, according to a poll of likely voters in 11 battleground states conducted by Brilliant Corners Research and obtained by POLITICO.
About nine in 10 blacks in swing states still back the president. While 71 percent of Latinos in swing states still approve of Obama’s performance, only 64 percent now say they are leaning toward him or plan to vote for him in 2012. That’s slightly worse than the 67 percent of Hispanic voters who supported Obama in 2008.
That’s not necessarily terrible news for Obama, however, considering that his campaign hasn’t yet kick-started what is expected to be a massive Hispanic outreach operation. About a quarter of Latino respondents backed Mitt Romney, despite his opposition to immigration reforms supported by many Spanish speakers.
The poll was conducted before the recent rise of Newt Gingrich, who backs some changes to immigration policy.
And there’s more evidence that tapping Florida Sen. Marco Rubio for the GOP vice presidential slot is no magic bullet, with Latino voters rating him unfavorable 26 percent to 24 percent.
Nor is the Occupy Wall Street movement firing up minority voters. Only 35 percent of black and Latino voters have a favorable impression; more than half either don’t have enough information to have an opinion or don’t like what they see.
Winning a high percentage of Latino support, especially in states such as Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico, Florida and Arizona will be critical if Obama is to offset the loss of white swing-state independents.
The survey, commissioned in mid-November by the Women of Color Policy Network at New York University’s Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, polled about 800 voters in New Mexico, Nevada, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Missouri.
“Black and Latino voters in swing states plan to turn out in 2012 for the presidential election. Ninety percent of black and Latino voters in battleground states say they are very likely to vote. And of those voters, 93 percent prefer Barack Obama to Mitt Romney,” wrote C. Nicole Mason, executive director of the network, in a memo.
Of likely voters, 50 percent are more interested in voting than in 2008 and only 5 percent are less interested in voting, she reported.
