Tell AT&T: Stop funding voter suppression

We wrote AT&T to let them know that more than 85,000 ColorOfChange members have asked that they disassociate themselves from ALEC. We made sure AT&T knew that through their membership in ALEC, they supported racially-discriminatory voter ID laws that have the potential to disenfranchise over 5 million people in the upcoming elections.

After hearing that information, Coca-Cola, Pepsi and Kraft Foods all decided to end their relationship with ALEC. But despite numerous emails and telephone calls, we can't get AT&T's management to get back in touch with us. It appears they believe that if they ignore us we'll simply go away.

Will you help us hold AT&T accountable for supporting voter suppression? Please take a moment to call AT&T and demand that they stop supporting ALEC.

1-Make The Call

Corporate PR staffer Mark Siegel

Introduce yourself and explain the issue:

I'm calling to ask that At&T stop supporting the American Legislative Exchange Council. ALEC is pushing legislation that suppresses the votes of black people, the elderly, youth and other minorities.

AT&T is funding an effort to disenfranchise people of color and undermine democracy. AT&T has made a substantial amount of money from Black consumers, but now your company is funding a group which is weakening the Black vote.

I urge you to immediately end your relationship with ALEC.

A couple of tips to keep in mind:

  • Be polite and calm. While we might be angry, we need to send a consistent message that can't be twisted to discredit us.
  • Stick to the message provided, but feel free to express it in your own words.
  • Read the script once or twice before calling, and even practice saying it aloud if you like.

2-Report Back here:

Let's do this people and please pass it on!

McDonald’s, Gates Foundation Cut Ties to Right-wing ALEC

The fast food giant McDonald’s has become the latest corporation to publicly cut ties with the right-wing American Legislative Exchange Council, or ALEC. ALEC has come under fire for backing a number of controversial measures including voter identification laws and so-called "Stand Your Ground" gun legislation. Soda companies Coca-Cola and Pepsi as well as food giant Kraft had previously dropped their sponsorship of the group. Earlier this week, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation withdrew from ALEC, citing recent criticism of its activities.

Wal-Mart Latest Company to Leave Right-Wing ALEC

The retail giant Wal-Mart has become the latest corporation to drop out of the American Legislative Exchange Council, a conservative legislative group with ties to the Koch Brothers. ALEC has come under intense criticism for promoting restrictive voter ID laws and the so-called "Stand Your Ground" self-defense law. The world’s largest retailer, Wal-Mart is also the biggest seller of firearms in the United States.
