Moratorium On Collecting Child Support ; backed by a jobs program

With overcrowded jails, unemployment, crime, and an ever increasing drug culture, what  would you implement to improve the collection of child support payments?

Payment of child support should be deferred if the father is attending school.  It should be the same as a loan for college.  He begins making payments once he completes his education.  He will have a hefty bill, but at least he will have attained the skills necessary to obtain a job that will allow him to support his child and take care of himself.  The idea definitely needs some work, but before we start talking about sending him to prison, let us make sure he has the means to cover his support payments.

I think there should not be no child support just 60/40 custody. While the woman got the child she is 100% responsible and while the dad have the child he is 100% responsible. 60/40 school/summer and the person that have the child during school should file taxes for the child because that parent will have to spend more.

The Government should stay out of family affairs. People must take care of their own familys.
Beautiful idea, Sheila!

That's definitely a great start, Rodney. If we can get these men (and women) into school/job training, I believe we can forgive(enact a moratorium) any outstanding debt of child support--the same way we do with third world countries.

Isn't the role of government to maintain a healthy society ( that includes helping families stay intact)? What would the United States resemble, if the housing, food and child saftey laws weren't passed?  For example, imagine a world without mandated car seats, child accident rates would skyrocket. I agree that government shouldn't be in every aspect of family life, but at times it does get things right. Implementing a program to help fathers gain employment and pay child support is a good idea. We all have a choice in how we want our tax dollars spent: guns vs. butter.

My first step would be to create a class where women would go to learn how to make better choices in men. Then I would move towards forming a class where males can learn what it means to be a man, and how to deal with money hungry baby mamas.

thank you sheila for sharing your thoughts. as a father who is caught in the system by his own actions for trying to be a responsible father, i agree with you entirely. money can never replace the love of both parents and our children needs to know that they are loved and wanted more then ever.

i personally dream of the day when your remedy is adopted by the family law courts.

Sheila makes a beautiful point...one should ask, why hasn't her commonsense approach to child support been implemented...one of the goals of child support enforcement is to destroy the family...you take the man financially out of the equation, society fails( overcrowded jails, failing schools, violent crimes, drug dealing, etc.).
