How the Racist “One Drop Rule” makes Obama and Tiger Woods black.

Ever wonder how a person is defined as being Black or an African American in the United States? It all goes back to something called “The One Drop Rule.” This definition was socially constructed by racists in the South, and has become the nation's definition with the backing of state and federal courts.

The Rule says that any person with any known African Black Ancestry (even one drop of "Black blood") is Black, including those who look white and are descended mostly from European, Asian, Hispanic, or Native American ancestors. (Even though our ethnicity comes from our genes, not our blood.) It is also known as the "One Black Ancestor Rule," and some courts have called it the "Traceable Amount Rule." Enforcement of this Rule during three and one-half centuries of miscegenation has produced an ethnic community defined as Black or African American that ranges in color and other physical traits from persons who look sub-Sahara African to others who look white or Native American.

DEVELOPMENT OF THE RULE

The One-Drop Rule arose to keep the mixed children of slaves in slavery! For a time there was a competing Rule in South Carolina and Louisiana which defined mulattos as an in-between class of "Coloreds" rather than as Blacks. This latter concept gave way to the One-Drop Rule in the 1850s in order to preserve slavery. After the emancipation, the One-Drop Rule helped to maintain racial segregation, white political domination, and the sexual exploitation of Black women. The Civil War, Jim Crow segregation, the Harlem Renaissance, and the Civil Rights Movement all strengthened the Rule. Blacks in general now strongly support the One-Drop Rule in order to preserve unity among all Americans defined as Blacks.

UNIQUENESS OF THE RULE

The One-Drop Rule is unique in two ways:

No other racial minority in the United States is subject to a One-Drop Rule. A person whose ancestry is one-fourth or less Chinese or Native American, for example, may be assimilated just as European immigrants have been, and still be proud of the minority ancestry. The concept of "passing as white," which reflects the One-Drop Rule, applies only to persons with some sub-Saharan African ancestry.

No other nation has a One-Drop Rule. Ethnically mixed persons elsewhere in the world have varying statuses, but all are in some sense considered mixed rather than being forced into a single racial category. A great many people not defined as Black in their native countries are defined as Blacks in the United States. People-of-color would be a more correct and acceptable label, if one is even necessary.

EXCEPTIONS, PROBLEMS, AND CURRENT CHALLENGES

Exceptions to the Rule exist for some Hispanics, some persons with Native American ancestry, the traditional Black Creoles, and some of the light Blacks adopted by whites. Such problems as dilemmas of racial identity, anxieties about "hidden Blackness," traumatic experiences of light Blacks, and conflicts over color differences and hair texture in the Black community are not new. However, public discussion of such problems has increased in recent years.

 

The movement to allow mixed children to identify themselves as "multi-racial," rather than as Black, highlights the administrative problems faced by the US Bureau of the Census and officials in Health, Education, Welfare, and adoption agancies as they attempt to cope with the One-Drop Rule in this “Race-Based Society.” As “multi-racial,” “multi-ethnic,” or “Mixed” become more acceptable concepts, this will cause increased problems for Blacks or African Americans who are ethnocentric or Afro-Centric who fear a diminished concern of race or ethnic consciousness and racial solidarity.

lineage, the right to fully embrace and to also receive
public support in choosing to acknowledge the truth

What some people disparagingly refer to as the 'one-drop rule' is a matter of history.  History is a lot like other, sometimes distasteful organic processes: it begins in one place, and ends somewhere else, independently of where you wanted it to.  You can complain about how it clashes with your sensibilities; meanwhile, there's all of us.

Someday, somebody needs to acknowledge that, for the light-skinneded among us, there's as wide a spectrum of loyalty, love and identity for and with Blackness, and the people we got it from, as there is of skin color.

I never read Toure's last book, but I suspect it had something or other to do with this.  Identity is irreducibly subjective in nature.  That's not necessarily how it should be, but before the face of the only wise, just and merciful God, it's how it is.

Some of us are bastards, metaphorically as well as otherwise.  I get it.  Meanwhile, the less you feed the stereotypes, the less you feed them.

Thank you to offie, AP G.i.f.t.s., and others who have contributed to this vital piece of historical fact mixed with some myth. It is all in the nature of oral history. Even some bits and pieces of written history were originally handed down orally. 

Here is my real concern (and it does not in any way minimize others' valued inputs):

Whether charcoal dark-skinned, light-skinned, or green-skinned, could anyone here who has a bully pulpit rise up to be identified and articulate how many cases of whatever-skinned human beings victimized by the system he or she has offered moral or other support to secure restitution. It is not enough to scream into microphones or organize talk-shops, how many have felt the love we readily mouth while millions of compatriots are dying; not just literally but really dying? How many? Am waiting to hear.

Hiding behind the cloak of anonymity would not help as it tends to whittle down the potential momentum that could have been built from knowing that others care.

Ah.  Let's talk about the Bible.  It's Deuteronomy.  The Jews have just left Egypt.  In chapter 23, after proscriptions against any kind of fraternization with neighboring tribes in Canaan, the Jews are told that Egyptians can be considered fully assimilated after they've lived among the Jews for three generations.

Now, you don't necessarily have to read Genesis with any literalist rigor to get the authorial intent.  As of the composition of Genesis, Ancient Hebrews were emphatic about identifying Egyptians with Cushites, and Hamites generally.  There's corroborating evidence from very different sources.  For instance, around 1990, a team of expert British Egyptologists and forensic anthropologists examined the mummy of a 19th-dynasty priest.  Here's a link to the book:

Now, it's interesting that Cush was in what is now the northern, 'Arab' Sudan, which has been waging de facto genocide on the southern, 'Black' part of the country.  I have to conclude that issues of racial identity are merely a kind of laboratory for a broader hallmark of adulthood: the willingness to acknowledge that life is as compicated as it looks, and to live with the attendant ambiguities.

The racist ‘one-drop’ “rule” was made ‘illegal’ in the U.S. in 
1967 by the U.S. Supreme Court via the ‘Loving vs. VA’ case 
(i.e. The ‘Loving’ case) – where the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that: 
.
--- 1) All ‘Anti-Miscegenation’ Laws found throughout the U.S.; 
.
 --- 2) The racist ‘VA Racial Integrity Act’ (upon which most 
of the anti-miscegenation ‘laws’ were founded); and 
.
--- 3) The ('black-lineage mocking' and exceedingly) racist 
‘One-Drop Rule’ (upon which the ‘Act’ was based.) 
.
… were all  ‘UN-Constitutional’ (i.e. illegal, banned, etc.).

Here are THE FACTS 
on Mixed-Race Linage:

1) It is often a surprise for people to learn that, 
in reality, there is actually No Such Thing 
As a “Light Skinned Black” person. 
. 
2) Very few people seem to be aware of the fact that the term 
“Light Skinned Black” is really nothing more than a racist 
oxymoron created by Racial Supremacists in an effort to 
forcibly deny those Mixed-Race individuals, who are of 
a Multi-Generational Multiracially-Mixed (MGM-Mixed) 
lineage, the right to fully embrace and to also receive
public support in choosing to acknowledge the truth 
regarding their full ancestral heritage and lineage. 
. 
3) The people who have been slapped with 
the false label and oxymoronic misnomer 
of “Light Skinned Black” person are simply 
Mixed-Race individuals — who are from those 
families which have been “of a CONTINUALLY 
Mixed-Race Lineage THROUGHOUT all of their 
multiple generations” (starting with the very 
first generation of racial-admixing and 
leading to their present generation.). 
. 
4) Seeing that every other Mixed-Race group is allowed 
the dignity of receiving support in having itself referred to 
by the term that it most prefers … the question becomes 
…“Why should the situation be any different for 
those Mixed-Race individuals who are of an 
Multi-Generational Multiracially-Mixed 
(MGM-Mixed) / Mixed-Race Lineage?”.

5) If an MGM-Mixed / Mixed-Race individual would like to 
be referred to by the term ‘Mixed-Race’ (which is what they 
actually are) rather than by that of “Light-Skinned Black“ 
(a term, which, once again, has the racist-origin of being 
nothing more than an oxymoronic-phrase that was both 
created and coined by Racial Supremacists in an effort to 
try to deny these Mixed-Race people their right to and support in 
publicly acknowledging and also embracing their FULL-Lineage) 
there is no reason that they (like every other group on the planet 
– whether Mixed-Race or not) should not be allowed the right 
to choose the term that society uses in referring to them 
(and to have their full-lineage acknowledged within that term).
