Smiley and West discuss Tom Junod's first-person Esquire article "The Lethal Presidency of Barack Obama".

Permalink Reply by Susan B. Randhava on July 15, 2012 at 11:45am Once again, I am so devastated by the direction your great show has been taking in going against President Obama. He talked about his distress with having to regroup & take "superpac" money, but he has had to confront the reality of what the Citizens United decision has done to our political process. The community of people who listen to & respond to your program need to hear the "other side" of why our President, in having to deal with Romney, has had to make certain directions in order to be able to try to stay as our president & be able, in his 2nd term, to pass the programs that he has stood for & bring up the poor to be the middle class. When Mitch McConell's 1st comment when president Obama won was "our sole mission is to make sure that he is a one-term president" it spelled out what has followed. The Jobs Act, etc, all of the great things he has tried to do, have met with a tea party congress that has stopped him at every turn. Our whole country will be in a better place his 2nd term because no one will be trying to repeat what Mitch McConnel said. PLEASE, PLEASE, give him the support he needs. All of these topics are turning away votes &/or disenfranchising those voters who still retain their right to vote. I grew up in a South before Civil Rights. Now we are witnees to an explosion of attempots to tear down.Civil Rights. If you don't support our President, he can lose. PLESE, PLEASE, let's hear some positive things about him, or else the Romney megamillions will win out over a dedicated & moral person & we will be in the worst backslide we have ever witnessed. Why not talk about the lies that Romney is perptrating instead? Thanks, & please respond to my concern.
Permalink Reply by Mike Bauer on July 15, 2012 at 11:54am It struck me that one of Tom Junod's purposes in "The Lethal Presidency of Barack Obama" was to cause me to feel compassion for the Islamic cleric who happened to be an American citizen and who was apparently targeted for assassination by our government.
I felt no compassion for the Muslim cleric whatsover. On the contrary, I felt totally elated that he had been killed.
In general, I obtained a deeper and enhanced appreciation and admiration for President Obama after I read Junod's essay. I am utterly delighted that our President has approved of targeting men and women like this radical Islamic cleric for assassination. I believe this is the right path for our government to take.

Thanks Alicia. This was the one I wanted to repost but I decided that "housekeeping" required me to maintain the order of posts (most of them) after weeding out the drugs.
I wish S&W would pay more attention to this site. LW

Permalink Reply by Mike Bauer on August 6, 2012 at 4:10pm I understand that you are extremely disappointed with President Obama and with the conditions of Blacks in America. I think you fail to see what is really going on, but you are free to feel disappointed with anyone and anything you wish. Here are my general perceptions on this matter: first, President Obama is not in control of the United States at all. If you think the President of the United States is the one who controls the country, you are very mistaken. The United States is controlled by multi-national corporations with trillions of dollars to invest and to influence and to control every aspect of life, not just in the United States but in every country of the world. The beauty of President Obama is that he is cares about every American and does everything in his limited power to benefit everyone. But he does not control who is employed or who goes to prison or who gets shot on the streets. Second, the United States is a drug-infested mess from top to bottom and left to right. Trillions of dollars are being spent and being made by drug traffickers every day of the year. The President of the United States does not control who is addicted to heroin and cocaine. This is where large sums of money are going: i.e., to the drug cartels who are murdering innocent women, men, and children by the thousands. Look at what happened last year in Juarez, Mexico. The President cannot stop this. Neither can I and neither can you. The only ones who can stop this are those who are addicted. Get off the drugs. End the demand for cocaine and heroin. The drug trade is the problem, not President Obama. He is not using. He is working everyday to make our nation fairer for everybody. Now let me tell you one last thing. Where I come from the majority of poor working people are whiter than white. They live in shacks and mobile homes. Some of them are self-employed mechanics, but most of them have fast-food service jobs that pay them minimum wage. Some of these working whites even have four-year college degrees, but they cannot find a job that pays better than minimum wage. A lot of these whites are also parents. That means that they are trying to support themselves and their kids on a minimum wage income. The bottom line is that this is not possible. You cannot pay rent, utilities, gas for the car, food, necessities for yourself and your kids on minimum wage. This is all that the community has available in terms of jobs. A few good industrial jobs exist, but a lot of our local industries have closed and laid off their employees. These are all white people now. I am not talking about blacks although blacks are certainly impacted too. But in my region whites are poor. Poor is the right word. They are poor in material things, but they are rich in non-material ways.

Permalink Reply by Ricardo Jones on August 8, 2012 at 2:32am Highest levels of unemployment for Black people and obama adminstration supports discrimination against Black people at the EEOC.
The mission of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) is to eradicate employment discrimination at the workplace. However, it has been reported that the EEOC fails to investigate the complaints of Black people who file race discriminaton complaints. According to former EEOC investigator (Mr. Ricardo Jones, Sr.) and the EEOC stats, the EEOC dismisses the majority of its race complaint workload. EEOC found reasonable cause that discrimination occurred only 3.5% of the time in FY 2010 and 3.1% for FY 2011. Great job obama. See link/stat's at EEOC Dismisses The Majority of Race Based Complaints.

Following law school, Michelle worked as an associate in the Chicago branch of the law firm Sidley Austin in the area of marketing and intellectual property. There in 1989, she met her future husband, Barack Obama, a summer intern whom she was assigned as an adviser. "I went to Harvard and he went to Harvard, and the firm thought, 'Oh, we'll hook these two people up,'" Michelle said. "So, you know, there was a little intrigue, but I must say after about a month, Barack…asked me out, and I thought no way. This is completely tacky." Initially, she refused to date Obama, believing that their work relationship would make the romance improper. Eventually she relented, and the couple soon fell in love.
After two years of dating, Barack proposed. "We were at a restaurant having dinner to celebrate the fact that he had finished the bar," Michelle remembers. "Then the waiter came over with the dessert and a tray. And there was the ring. And I was completely shocked." The couple married at Trinity United Church of Christ on October 18, 1992.
High-Profile Work in Chicago
Michelle soon left her job to launch a career in public service, serving as an assistant to Mayor Daley and then as the assistant commissioner of planning and development for the City of Chicago.
In 1993, she became Executive Director for the Chicago office of Public Allies, a non-profit leadership-training program that helped young adults develop skills for future careers in the public sector.
Michelle joined the University of Chicago in 1996 as associate dean of student services, developing the University’s first community service program. She then worked for the University of Chicago Hospitals beginning in 2002, as executive director of community relations and external affairs.
In May 2005, she was appointed vice president of community relations and external affairs at the University of Chicago Medical Center, where she continues to work part-time. She also manages the business diversity program and sits on six boards, including the prestigious Chicago Council on Global Affairs and the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools
