Hundreds of activists occupied Wall Street this week in protest of the banking bailout amid rising unemployment.

Smiley: I’m encouraged by all signs that this democratic awakening is starting to take place.

West: Courageous folk. Civil disobedience is part and parcel of the American democratic process.

Indeed, it is. And with that let me say this:

Barack H. Obama: Elect Him Again!

Solyandra $535million, front seat at the white house, and plead the 5th...

I agree!  It is wonderful to see America practice the CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE.  Unfortunately, it falls on DEAF EARS!  I would like to see the government teach ECONOMICS 101 to everyone in the US.  If there is no demand for more products and services, companies are not going to hire.  It is illogical to expect businesses to carry extra personnel, extra costs on their balance sheets when good business means running efficiently, LEAN AND MEAN, to maximize profits to the stockholders.  America is not a socialist country and never will be (I hope the models in EU serve as deterrent)!!  Socialism COSTS TOO DAMN MUCH!

Instead of wasting time expecting companies to CHANGE THEIR SPOTS, which they never will, I say brainstorm and come up with new ideas to get AMERICANS BACK TO WORK.  Also, understand that US 9% unemployment is not as bad as it seems. Folks have a tendency to think US had a 0% unemployment rate to start with!   NOOoooooo... we were, I think in 2001, at 4.2%.  So we have had an increase of about 5% in unemployment as a whole in the US.  Not as bad when viewed without the rose colored glasses.

is 9% the true unemployment rate?

This nation has an appetite for destruction and its eating its source of revenue. The blue collar worker that make up the majority of manufacturing, distributing, production in this country. This economic crunch is getting erasing the stability of your lower level white collar employees and local stores that thrive off of the business of the commom man and woman, not major corporations. Your local coffee shop will close because the patrons that use to come in have lost their jobs, have been down sized. These local coffe shops arent survivng off of the $20,000.00 order of coffee and bagels by the corporate building downtown, they are surving by the constant traffic of those in and out with a $5.00 order.

Only those that are benefiting in this time of financial stress side with major corporations and right wingers. If you are the majority of this country that were and remain to struggle with your financial stability because of lack of employment, business relocating over seas, the pension debacle, etc. Then you understand the anger by others in your own or similar situation.

Remember the pennies that one have acquired in the success of their business or investments can also change for the worse by the stroke of pen. Nothing is fully insured or guaranteed in this country. You, Yourself cannot dictate the value of the dollar or when it will rise and fall. Always remember that.

People are finally waking up and taking a stand for what a democracy is all about!!!!

I agree with you 100%.  We need to put an age limit or a time on limit on the members of Congress. We need some people in Congress that will take a stand for the people.  Members that will take a risk for the sake of the people. This country deserves to be represented by a Congress that will do what is best for the country.  Cut out all the fat and if you need some help you can get a group of single mothers and we can show you everywhere money is going out of the window.  Right now we need new and fresh ideas.  We need to rethink this thing, because what I have found is that even though you may have the credentials doesn't necessary mean that you are the best person for the job.  In other words, if you are only hiring college educated people for certain jobs, you are closing the door on the creative mind.  This is like locking out half of the solutions to our problems.  The creative mind has proven to be just as valuable the college educated mind.  God is so good, because he gave everyone a purpose!  Thank you Jesus!!!!!

To be frankly honest, I've not seen any disobedience.  What I've seen is gestapo style tactics being employed in an attempt to silence people whose only "crime" is exercising their first amendment right to freedom of speech.

The fact is that using portable fences to rope people in against buildings is kidnapping.  Assaulting them while they are there is torture.  Acting in this manner makes the police WAR CRIMINALS.

Until people rise up and demand prosecution of the criminal activities of officials who ignore our laws...and international treaties such as the Geneva Convention...the USA will continue to be a rogue nation where justice is a fantasy.

If the conclusion is being drawn that the ruling oligarchy and their increasing concentration of wealth is the greatest threat to democracy, then this is a watershed event and should be supported. That the continued existence of a ruling oligarchy is the fully matured and natural offspring of generations of white skinned privilege and exploitation is an irony that is not lost on me when I watch caucasian police pepper spray their wives sisters and mothers in obedience to the same oppressive apparatus that continues to slay my seed everyday.

As an operative reality, Obama and Cain serve the same masters. Then of what difference does it make which brown hand puppet has center stage when the same folks are orchestrating the play?

"The left must realize that when progressives achieved success in the past, whether at organizing unions or fighting for equal rights, they seldom bet their future on on politicians."

"A reconnection with ordinary Americans is vital not just to defeating conservatives in 2012 and elections to come. Without it, the left will remain unable to state clearly and passionately what a better country would look like and what it will take to get there. To paraphrase the labor martyr Joe Hill, the left should stop mourning its recent past and change the future. "
