		President Obama appeared at Rev. Al Sharpton’s conference this week, just days after announcing his re-election campaign. Smiley: The President knows his base in Black America is shaky. You can’t play that history card more than one time. West: Sharpton is wrong to provide cover to Obama given the level of Black suffering and misery.

I do NOT agree.  The premise that the Obama is even attempting to use the history race card again is on you not him. History would still be made as the only 2 term Black President.  Sharpton is not wrong, nor is he covering.  The Black blight in America is not going to be solved by one man Black or White and Sharpton is smart enough to know that.

Our President has every right to visit/attend any conference that he wishes.

I met our beloved President at a weekly Trade Bureau meeting at Rainbow/PUSH one Saturday morning in Chicago. This was before he publicly announced his run for the U.S. Senate. There is no question that he feels a sense of allegiance to the Black community, but he is also well aware that where there is unity, there is strength.  He will need the entire community - and both genders - to win re-election. Let us remain prayerful through it all.

Some negroes will never learn. Obama is nothing but fascism in black face. he is just much a water carrier for corporate interests as Bush was. They got crafty with this one, figured after Bush they'd have to get a shill that would put certain demographics at ease and allow them a free-for-all...they knew exactly how to play it and US. Don't be fooled by surface---Obama has just continued Bush's policies and has even expanded on them---Libya. A country that not only poses no threat to national security but there is no reliable proof that Gadaffi was GOING to commit so-called human rights abuses against Libyan citizens as the US & it's nato whores used as an excuse to bomb them--at least Bush did go thru the motions and came up with the lame "WMD" lie--Obama didn't even bother. At the end of the day, the US has taken up the helm of Hitler's Nazi Germany--trying to bulldoze and bluster it's way across the world, invading sovereign nations at will---UNTIL someone stopped them. Ironies abound. I wonder what all the brothers who served during WWII would think if they realized that while they were literally dying to serve to prove they were loyal americans, the US govt would turn around and covertly and secretly bring over thousands of nazi war criminals who were scientists that specialized in "mind control experiments" on Jews and other nefarious wartime activities. So while black servicement came back to 2nd class citizenship these fascists (literally) were not only welcomed as new citizens (albeit not legally recognized and acknowledged publicly by US govt) but also gainfully employed and installed in prominent spots in US intelligence agencies as wel as dept of defense and military. Ever wonder why US as of late feels eerily similiar to Nazi Germany? Wonder no more. Nazis didn't lose, they just moved to the US! Probably courtesy black people's tax $!   Don't believe me? The energy spent railing against POTUS and denigrating his efforts are reflective of a misconception that you could negotiate the complexities of this pluralistic global political dynamic better. PBO is a politician and currently responsible for steering the ship of state through the most complex national and international turbulence any recent president has encountered. The cargo, crew, and passengers on this ship of state include the essentials of our survival in the 21st century. There is a contentious and divisive crew in perpetual tension  due to the political dialectics of the national and global dynamics. The body politic is composed of a  diverse blend and  stratified configuration of affluent and vulnerable whose needs are conflicting and confounding. Forge a grass root agenda the addresses the needs of African Americans and mobilize to create the gales that will allow POTUS to turn the ship of state in the direction we desire. However be cognizant that it won't turn on a dime.

Tavis, I think this is a good start! President Obama had to deal with some pretty heavy issues the first few years in office. Be patient. He is going to do something for his people. I believe his contacting Al Sharpton is the first step. Yes, its a political move no doubt; but, the greater move will be seen when does something for black ppl that will make him really shine (he knows that).

I disagree totally with your assertion that Al Sharpton is providing cover for President Obama.  President Obama is doing a great job given the hand he was dealt when he was elected.  In addition because of the toxic racial climate in this country he can't even look like he is favoring Blacks.  He must emphasize the improvement of the entire society of which Blacks are a significant part.  He is emphasizing focusing on health care and education for the society at large.  Do a program focusing on Blacks taking responsibility of their actions and our community.  Lets criticize the Black on Black crime and the disintergration of the Black familyh.  I sick of Smiley and West's criticism of the President.
