Permalink Reply by KEITH (TART) BOND on July 3, 2011 at 5:39am For me, Obama fell short a lot of places where I felt he had a good opportunity to do much better. I have no idea what happened or why he went south on my and I am not at all happy about it. He has done some good things, that I admit, but he stopped short when he could really made the mark. Some times, I can't figure out who's side he is on.
I am still with him as far a voting for him, because of the alternative, but just because he is black, just because he is a democrat, does not give him a pass. Like Janet said in her song, "What have you done for me Lately?" Or better yet, what the hell are you doing to me.. Get on the good foot Obama. I don't know what you are waiting for. The healthcare bill should have been a home run and you punted.
That is just and example. I am not saying Obama hasn't gotten some things done, but he sure has me wondering what he has in mind. I'm willing to accept that he may be off to a slow start because of the republicans, but some things are a given and he seems like he doesn't even see them.
Obama, that last speech you made about the republican wanting to save corporate jet subsidies is fine, but that is the tip of the iceberg. You have a lot of work to do, and I for one would appreciate it if you would get busy.

Tax Exempt/NonProfit Organizations

I'm not familiar with Black/African American nonprofit/tax exempt organizations in my area in California. I did look up a larger city which is Sacramento CA.
It didn't give me a category for Black/African American non-profits, and didn't tell me how much money is involve but by lumping them all together. Many of them are churches. I've always felt black churches need to do a better job in meeting the needs of their communities and could be the answer to efficient management of finances to improve living conditions in the black community. They have the ability to call their members together in a civic organization that's non-profit that does not answer to their church organizations. That way they are not putting church organizations in jeopardy. The Bible tells us not to let our light be hid under a basket but that must be what the black churches are doing.
Black/African American nonprofit/tax exempt organizations seem to be appointed to specific services. Chances are, many are little more than political organizations. I don't think there is one specific Black/African American nonprofit dedicated to managing economics in the black communities nation wide. That is what we need!
A bunch of unrelated help organizations are not expected to meet the needs of a community. There is naturally going to be inefficiency and overhead is going to eat up a good deal of the budget! The government is failing to fund such an organization to deal with economics in the black community. You can't break things up like that and expect things to be accomplished in the most efficient manner.
If you have one organization all these separate organizations answered to, and it provided oversight, then you could say funding is adequate or inadequate given a certain amount of dollars per population in need of certain services. It's hard to say if it's true that money is being blown unethically or simply due to the inefficiency because of the nature of the beast!
It's not generally the fault of these separate organizations but a government that does not create a central organization to coordinate the separate specialized Black/African American nonprofit organizations to reach the objective of improving conditions in the black community.
It sounds a lot like the government is the organization these separate autonomous organizations are answering to. They are likely doing only as they are allowed to do according to the way they are legally established. Accounting has to be done. They can't decide on their own to consolidate their funds and resources to accomplish an objective. That stuff has to be approved.
Black churches are the best organizations to accomplish the creation of a national organization to manage the needs of the black communities and take us to increases in black businesses and thus, better paying black jobs, and better living environments in black communities.
Still, it will take government funding many years to build better black communities due to the present economic conditions of the black community. Because 90% of the resources and means of production are owned by others, the black community will not likely become totally self sufficient but only hope to become a good degree better than what it is. There is no way of getting around the math and the racially biased environment opposed to black progress! Anything blacks can produce, they can produce better and cheaper! They have much more money and bigger markets to leverage against us! Their objectives is to out-compete you for sells in your small black market. It's the reason blacks buy from those who don't support their community! They don't have the money to pay more for products, and pay the rent, utilities, and eat!
If you're a black business that depends totally on the black community, it is difficult to keep afloat! Black businessmen have to be able to expand beyond the black community in order to be a success very long. It's the only way you get the same volume discounts your competitor gets so you can offer competitive prices for goods! You'd have to, at least, be able to have stores in many large cities with big black populations if you're restrained to doing business exclusively in the black community! You can deny the math but you can't defy it!
Do me and yourself a favor. Pull the 990 for ten organizations in your community that you know are led by African Americans and add up the amount of government funding they are receiving. This is public information. Then take time to assess the work that they are doing in the community. If the state of affairs in the African American community in your city is similar to mine, I am certain that you will feel the same way I do. In response to your comment about the real unemployment in the African American Community nationwide, are you suggesting that we continue complaining and begging for someone else to give us a job? You have already indicated that average wages are lower in the African American community. Do you expect others to hire us and pay us what they pay themselves? Let's keep it real. That is not going to happen. If we want more, we have to do what the Asians, Arab Americans, and Latinos are doing. First, we have to get educated; then we have to collaborate with others (beginning with our own family members; finally, we have to create opportunities for ourselves. Open your eyes and look at what every one else is doing. They are not marching, whining, or begging for a handout. They are making it happen for themselves. Ask yourself, why is it that a dollar circulates in the African American community once? Who is taking the resources out of our community?
Obama drama said:You say that right in the face of 16-30% real unemployment in black communities with average wages that are likely far lower in black communities than any other community! That's beyond laughable! I feel a chill! Is it because of the snow you're blowing?!
Black businesses will have a difficult time even with job and wage equality. They still have to confront the size of the black market not being big enough to support overhead and get the volume discounts to render a decent profit. It will take a very strong effort for black businesses to expand beyond the black community. Short of increasing the black population in America, it will take black businesses making join ventures with other races and expanding significantly beyond markets in the black community! We need to overcome our own racism and disrespect for one another in order to move forward!
I'll grant you that it's true we have things we can do to improve our circumstances where we are. Besides teaching our children to love and respect each other, work together, get educated, buy from our own stores, and such, we need to come together and start making purchases across territorial lines to get those volume discounts and start creating institutions that design and build our communities with the funds we receive from business and government! We need to create our own security for our businesses! We need to provide our own insurance for businesses! Our community banks need to improve. Unless we show ourselves capable of development in areas like this, what other races will be foolish enough to want a joint venture with us?!
That is only half of the picture! THERE IS NO OVERCOMING WITHOUT JOBS AND WAGE EQUALITY! WHO SHOULD WE FOCUS ON IF NOT THE PRESIDENT WHEN THESE INEQUALITIES REMAIN AND NEEDS GO UNATTENDED AND FUNDS UNCHECKED!
JOBS EQUALITY! is where the fight naturally should begin! JOBS INEQUALITY! is why all else is out of focus! Getting JOBS EQUALITY! is paramount to improving the black condition! JOBS EQUALITY! is that solid foundation from which we can build! JOBS EQUALITY! is the impetus and ability to bring all else into order and proper functionality! It is the stone the builders gave but allowed to be taken away with 40 acres and a mule! It's not us who are responsible for our condition but those who give and then take back, or not give enough to meet the need!
I'd love to know the magnitude of funds the government is contributing to black communities and whether it's indeed sufficient to meet the need. I've always heard accountability is a problem. I'm wondering if I'm right to believe it's more a problem with adequate government funding! I don't like the idea of taking a few indiscretions by a few black managers and blowing that up when things were never really funded adequately! Where do I get the skinny on those kinds of things? What's true and what is just a bunch of snow clouding up the issue!
Ree Timmer said:African Americans do need a movement, but not a political movement. We need a social movement to raise the consciousness of our people. Hundreds of millions of dollars flow through not-for-profit organizations throughout our communities and African American social and political elite rarely discuss the need to hold these agencies accountable. Many African-American led local not-for-profit organizations have ineffective boards and staff who are short-sighted, territorial, and disrespectful to the clients they are funded to help. We are spending so much time talking about President Obama, but there is a lot that we can do within our own communities. This is the where our energy needs to be focused. Presidents come and go, but the state of African American communities across this country will not change unless we take a stand and hold everyone who receives our tax dollars accountable.

Permalink Reply by Tessa Byrd on July 3, 2011 at 10:22pm Mr. Arrington I have been asked to host one of the Van Jones events in my city...
If you would not mind could you give some of the specifics...Is the location provided or are you responsible to find a place? Are there materials provided by the organization (moveon.org) for distribution? Will Mr. Jones or a representative of the organization be attending each event? I just wanted to have a little more info before I pressed the I will host button...Thank-you, any info you are willing to share is useful...

I think I missed something. I was born in this country and obviously grew up under the insanity that was Jim Crow, the freedom rides, the civil rights movement, and everything else that has gone on since that time.
I am not totally pleased with Obama's performance to be sure, but it seems that some people manage to live on a different planet for last fifty years...."

Stop smoking what you are smoking long enough to get your feet on the ground and either help us organize for positive change, or shut the f-ck up. That kind of insane negativity is counter productive and if you hate Obama, fine, but your dig about him being a "jig dancing traitor" is treasonous in my book. I hope I don't see you on the street. It doesn't matter how much you hate our president, he still is our president and he deserves more respect than that. Not only is he our president, but he is our first black president and he is up against a bunch of radical republicans that are not making his job any easier.
I disagree with a lot of what he does, but he is a hell of a lot better than a republican.
